1903
Shamrock III is the second and last challenger designed by William Fife III, Jr.
The third of Lipton's challengers is launched on Saint Patrick's Day, March 17, 1903, and is christened by the Countess of Shaftesburry. Shamrock III undergoes its first trials on March 31 on the Clyde, sailing with Shamrock I.
On April 18, Shamrock III snaps her mast, injuring several of her crew and killing one man through drowning.
On May 28, 1903, Lipton decides that the first and third Shamrock-named yachts will leave for the United States. It's the first time in Cup history that a challenger arrives before the Cup to train on the race course area with a trial horse.
The America's Cup
August 22 to September 3, 1903, off New York, United States.
Reliance races against Shamrock III in the best of five race series.
There are three race course options.
The first one is 15-nautical miles to leeward and return from Sandy Hook Lightship.
The second one is a 30-nautical mile equilateral triangle.
The third one is 40-nautical miles to leeward and return from Sandy Hook Lightship.
Results
- August 22, first race, 30 mile windward-leeward course: Reliance beats Shamrock III by seven minutes and three seconds on corrected time.
- August 25, second race, 30 mile triangular course: Reliance beats Shamrock III by one minute and 19 seconds on corrected time.
- September 3, third race, 40 mile windward-leeward course: Reliance beats Shamrock III. Shamrock III does not finish.
Reliance beats Shamrock III by three wins to nil
During the last race, the fog is so thick that Shamrock III loses its way and Captain Robert Wringe decides to withdraw and sail directly to his mooring. Shamrock III is been beaten even more convincingly than Shamrock II in 1901.
Sir Thomas Lipton puts Shamrock I and Shamrock III up for sale in the United States, but there are no takers. Both yachts sail back to Great Britain.
