Weatherly - US 17

New York Yacht Club, USA, Edition 18(1962)

Designer : Philip L. Rhodes
Builder : Luders Marine Construction Company

- 1958: Unsuccessful defence candidate for the 17th America's Cup.
- 1962: Victorious defender of the 18th 1962 America's Cup

1958
Commissioned by a syndicate from New Jersey, Weatherly suffered during its building from a total absence of effort into saving weight and thus was a heavy boat.

During the defender selection trials, its crew could often be seen removing unnecessary weight. Columbia, Vim, Gleam and Easterner easily outclassed it.

1962
Weatherly was lightened through a re-design and re-build. Its bow was shortened, its wetted surface reduced and all the weight saved put in the keel.
It sailed the defender selection trials to race against the Australian challenger Gretel. The other contenders were Nefertiti, Columbia and Easterner but on August 25th, 1962, NYYC Commodore, Henry Morgan selected Weatherly to defend the Cup.

America's Cup races
: September 15 to 25, 1962 - Newport, Rhode Island -
Best four out of seven races.

Weatherly vs. Gretel

Course:
South of Newport. The America's Cup Buoy anchored nine miles SSE of the Brenton Reef Lightship. Two alternate courses - one triangular (8 miles to each side) to be used for races 2, 4 & 6 (distance: 24.0 miles); the other windward-leeward to be used for races 1, 3, 5 & 7, was 6 miles on a leg, twice around the course (distance: 24.0 miles).

Races: five sailed.

Results:

Weatherly beat Gretel by four wins to one.

- September 15, first race sailed on windward-leeward leg twice around course. Wind: 290 degrees, 10 knots. Weatherly beat Gretel by 3 minutes & 46 sec.
- September 18, second race sailed on triangular course. Wind: 285 degrees, 20-25 knots. Gretel beat Weatherly by 47 seconds.
- September 20, third race sailed on windward-leeward leg twice around course. Wind: 010 degrees, 9-12 knots. Weatherly beat Gretel by 8 minutes & 40 sec.
- September 22, fourth race sailed on triangular course. Wind: 175 degrees, 8-10 knots. Weatherly beat Gretel by 26 sec.
- September 25, third race sailed on windward-leeward leg twice around course. Wind: 245 degrees, 8-10 knots. Weatherly beat Gretel by 3 minutes & 40 sec.

Weatherly still heavier than Gretel, and the Americans lost the second race. Overall, the performance by the Australians was superb and impressed the Americans.

1967

1970
