How exactly do the images of the regattas get from the America´s Cup Port to our living rooms? Who gets to decide what we see? And what in world is a realization room?
The answers to all of these questions can be found at the “TV Games” near the South Bases of the America’s Cup Port where you can learn about all the jobs that make it possible for people all around the world to watch the 32nd America’s Cup. The exhibition is a mix of information and interactive games and visitors can see first hand and live two of the fundamental jobs of production.
The first part of the exhibit focuses on the work of the “news director” who condenses all the information and the frames into the most important highlights of the race. Selecting the most representative pictures to fit into a very short report is one of the greatest challenges of this job. In addition to that there is a load of written information to browse and thanks to a huge bay-window you can watch the real-time action inside one of the IBC (International Broadcasting Center) newsrooms as the professionals work.
Another job highlighted by the exhibition is the Live TV Producer who is responsible for choosing the right camera at the right time to catch all the action of a match race and deliver it to your TV. Once again, you can see professionals at work thanks to a window and feel the pressure they face.
In addition there are diagrams that show exactly how the images get from the 32nd America’s Cup get to your TV.
After taking it all in it’s time to try your own hand at production. There are two games, offers a chance to do the work of a news editor. Here you have just 2 minutes to select the best images of a race and put together a summary clip. After that you can add in sound and commentary. And when your masterpiece is complete you can send the finished product to your friends by e-mail do wonder at your brilliance.
The other game offers a chance to try doing what the Live TV Producers do. Given your pick of five different shots, it´s up to you to choose the best angle and the best camera for following the race.
